Taxes

Charge sales tax or VAT as a named percentage on what you bill.

A tax is a name, such as “CA Sales Tax”, and a rate. You enter taxes on each invoice or subscription. Bias doesn’t keep a list of saved rates and doesn’t look up rates for you.

Add taxes to an invoice

In the invoice form, add taxes under Taxes with Add tax. They apply to every line item that doesn’t have taxes of its own.

To tax one line item differently, open it, expand Item details, and add Taxes there. A line item’s own taxes replace the invoice’s taxes for that line.

Bias calculates each tax on the line’s amount after discounts and rounds it to the cent per line. Several taxes on one line each apply to the same amount, so they add up rather than compound.

Tax a subscription

When you start a subscription, add taxes under More options in Tax. Bias calculates them again on every renewal invoice. To change a subscription’s taxes later, update its default_taxes with the API.

QuickBooks

Invoices synced from QuickBooks keep QuickBooks’ tax amounts as they are, so their totals match QuickBooks exactly.

In the API, a line item’s taxes replace the invoice’s default_taxes for that line. Each line’s tax_amounts lists what each tax charged, and the invoice’s tax_total is their sum.
