Dual pricing
Show card prices on your invoices and discount payments by bank account.
How it works
With dual pricing on, Bias adds your rate to the prices on an invoice’s payment page, PDF and emails, rounded to the nearest cent. Customers who pay by card or Apple Pay pay those card prices. Customers who pay by US bank account (ACH) get a Bank account discount that takes the rate back off, so they pay the prices you set. At 3%, a $100.00 invoice shows $103.00 and costs $103.00 by card and $100.00 by bank account.
Dual pricing applies to one-off invoices, paid on the invoice payment page or in the billing portal. It doesn’t apply to:
- Subscription invoices
- Invoices that Bias charges automatically to a saved payment method
- Checkout, checkout links, Checkout elements and your Shopify store
The bank account option on the payment page shows how much the customer saves, and the total updates to match the payment method the customer picks. Card prices apply to all cards, including debit and prepaid cards. Receipts for card payments show card prices.
Turn it on
- Go to Settings → Invoices.
- Under Dual pricing, check Enable dual pricing.
- Enter a Rate, then save.
The Dual pricing section appears once you’ve enabled US bank accounts in checkout settings, so customers always have a way to pay without card prices.
Each invoice keeps the rate it had when you finalized it. Changing the rate applies to invoices you finalize afterward.
The API
An invoice’s checkout session carries its rate in dual_pricing, which defaults to the rate in your invoice settings. The session needs a payment method type that isn’t charged the card price, such as us_bank_account. Card and Apple Pay payments must charge dual_pricing.amount_remaining, the card price. Other payment methods charge amount_remaining. A card or Apple Pay payment must pay the full dual_pricing.amount_remaining, so it always completes the session.
You can set an invoice session’s rate when you create or update it, or pass null to turn it off, while the session is open and no payment on it is in progress. Passing a dual_pricing rate on a session that isn’t for an invoice, or that’s for a subscription invoice, returns an error.
Compliance
Warning
Card network rules and state and local laws govern charging different prices for card and bank payments, including how you post and disclose each price. They vary by card type and by where you and your customers are. Turning on dual pricing doesn’t make your pricing compliant on its own. Check with your counsel or payments advisor before you turn it on, and keep your listed prices, rate, and disclosures consistent with the rules that apply to you.
